Ingredients

  • 1 prepared (10-12 oz) angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 lbs fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar for macerating strawberries
  • 8 oz full-fat cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 container (16 oz) Cool Whip or whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 package (3 oz) strawberry gelatin powder optional for firmer layers
  • 1/2 cup boiling water only if using gelatin

Equipment

  • Large trifle bowl or 9x13 dish
  • Hand mixer
  • Rubber spatula
  • Mixing Bowls

Method

  1. Macerate the strawberries: Toss sliced strawberries with granulated sugar and let sit for 20 minutes until juicy.
  2. Make the cream filling: Beat softened cream cheese with powdered sugar and vanilla until completely smooth. Fold in two thirds of the whipped topping gently until light and airy.
  3. First layer: Spread angel food cake cubes in an even layer across the bottom of the trifle bowl or dish.
  4. Add filling and strawberries: Spoon half the cream cheese mixture over the cake. Top with half the macerated strawberries and their juices.
  5. Repeat layers: Add remaining cake cubes, then remaining cream filling, then remaining strawberries.
  6. Top and chill: Spread the remaining whipped topping across the top. Garnish with whole strawberries. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours before serving.

Notes

  • Do not skip macerating the strawberries - the juice is essential for flavor.
  • Cream cheese must be fully softened with no lumps before mixing.
  • Best served within 24 hours of assembly for optimal texture.
  • Can be made in individual glasses or mason jars for easy portioned serving.
  • Fresh whipped cream can replace Cool Whip for a less stabilized but fresher tasting result.
