Ingredients

  • 10 Original Babybel cheese rounds, wax removed
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon of milk
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Olive oil spray
  • Freshly chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Shallow bowls
  • Parchment paper

Method

  1. Prepare Breading Station: Arrange three shallow bowls. Fill the first with flour, the second with the eggs and milk whisked together, and the third with panko breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. Prep the Cheese: Unwrap the Babybel cheeses and pat them dry to ensure the coating adheres well.
  3. Coat the Cheese Thoroughly: Dredge each cheese wheel first in flour, then dip into the egg mixture, and finally press firmly into the panko coating. For a superior crust, repeat the egg and panko dip a second time.
  4. Freeze Before Frying: Arrange the breaded cheese on a parchment-lined plate and freeze for a minimum of 10-15 minutes to prevent melting too quickly.
  5. Preheat Air Fryer: Set your air fryer to 380°F (193°C). Mist the basket with olive oil spray.
  6. Air Fry to Perfection: Place the frozen cheese bites in a single layer within the air fryer basket. Spray their tops with olive oil and cook for 5-7 minutes, flipping once halfway, until golden and crisp.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Allow the cheese bites to rest for a minute as they will be very hot. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve immediately with your preferred dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Chef's Secret: The freezing step is non-negotiable! Chilling the breaded cheese for at least 10-15 minutes is the crucial trick that prevents the cheese from leaking out while the crust gets perfectly golden and crispy. For the ultimate crunch, always choose panko breadcrumbs over regular ones for a lighter, shatteringly crisp texture.
