Ingredients

  • 6 small yellow onions peeled with root intact
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 1 spray olive oil cooking spray

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Paring Knife
  • Mixing Bowls

Method

  1. Cut the top off each onion and slice downwards into 8 sections, stopping a quarter inch before the root. Pry the petals open slightly.
  2. Set up a breading station. Put flour in one bowl. Whisk eggs and milk in a second bowl. Mix Panko and seasonings in a third bowl.
  3. Dredge each onion in the flour, then dip into the egg mixture letting excess drip off, and finally coat thoroughly in the seasoned Panko.
  4. Preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray the basket with olive oil spray.
  5. Place the breaded onions in the basket, spray the tops with olive oil, and cook for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

Notes

  • Check at 10 minutes; cover loosely with foil if browning too quickly.
  • Ensure the onions are fully dried before the flour stage to help the breading stick.
